Nigerian Government discontinues US military training against terror group, Boko Haram.

The Nigerian government has cancelled the ongoing training of its military to enable it confront the Islamic terrorist group, Boko Haram by the United States . It is unclear why the partnership ended but the termination follows after the US refusal to sell Cobra helicopters and lethal weapons needed in the fight against Boko Haram to Nigeria.

The US in response to its denial of selling the helicopters to Nigeria cited concerns that Nigeria could not use and maintain the Cobra helicopters.

The state department spokesperson Rodney Ford said “At the request of the Nigerian government, the United States will discontinue its training of a Nigerian Army battalion.
“…we regret premature termination of this training, as it was to be the first in a larger planned project that would have trained additional units with the goal of helping the Nigerian Army build capacity to counter Boko Haram.”

"The U.S. government will continue other aspects of the extensive bilateral security relationship, as well as all other assistance programs, with Nigeria," he said. "The U.S. government is committed to the long tradition of partnership with Nigeria and will continue to engage future requests for cooperation and training."
