Winnie
Madikizela-Mandela suffered a big blow to her bid to block a family meeting in
Nelson Mandela’s Qunu home when the Mthatha High Court struck out her case
because the property doesn’t belong to her. Winnie
sought the help of the court to stop the meeting arguing that the gathering
could result in violence and vandalism on the property.
The
meeting, which is set to take place on Friday, was called by Mandla Mandela, Nelson
Mandela’s grandson. The meeting was to address the issue of the rightful head
of the family – the person entitled to officiate over family rituals between
the Mandela family and the abaThembu clan.
The matter
was struck off the roll, meaning the family meeting can take place. Winnie was
also instructed to pay the cost of the application. She is challenging her late
ex-husband’s estate claiming the property was given to her while he was in
prison.
