Botched heist at Bedford Shopping Centre, Johannesburg, South Africa

Seven people (three customers, two security guards and two of the alleged bandits) were caught in a shoot-out at a botched heist at Bedford shopping center, Bedfordview, Johannesburg East on Thursday morning.

The popular shopping centre’s bright white floor smeared with a vivid trail of blood, while the ground was also strewn by broken glass caused by stray bullets. The botched heist targeted a bank inside the mall according to vocative.com with the gang approaching SBV security guards who were collecting cash from a bank before a short but intense firefight broke out.

One suspect was shot in the leg and tried to run away but was found in the basement area and another suspect who had been shot in the chest was found near the escalators. The two are being treated under police guard. All seven that were shot are in serious but stable condition in hospital.

Police recovered an AK-47 and unlicensed handgun at the crime scene and have launched a manhunt for the rest of the gang. Police forensic team spent hours overnight collecting evidence in the Bedford Centre.

The Hawks have taken over the investigation into the Bedford Centre robbery and shooting. Hawks spokesman Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said a group of around 10 robbers had committed the crime.
