Widespread looting of foreign-owned stores in South Africa



There has been widespread looting of foreign-owned stores in South Arica which started in Soweto last week. The looting was sparked after a 14-year-old boy, Siphiwe Mahori was shot in Snake Park, Soweto by a Somali shopkeeper, Alodixashi Sheik Yusuf who allegedly fired at a group of people trying to rob his shop.

Yusuf appeared in the Protea Magistrate’s Court on Monday morning in connection with Mahori’s murder. The trial was postponed so a Somali interpreter can be found.
The looting have spread to Eden Park, Ekuruhuleni, Gauteng. A group of 20 people around 10 am on Monday morning were reportedly trying to loot a spaza shop. The group dispersed when police arrived on the scene.
