An
Egyptian appeal court has overturned a three-year prison sentence against former
president Hosni Mubarak who was convicted on corruption charges. Mubarak
started serving his jail term in May
last year after being found guilty
of fraudulently billing the government for
100,000 Egyptian pounds about $14 million which was earmarked for the
maintenance of presidential palaces.
The Court
of Cassation, Egypt's top appeals court, announced that it had overturned the convictions
for embezzlement and ordered a retrial at a brief session on Tuesday morning.
Though the Court of Cassation did not specify whether Mubarak was a free man
following its judgment, his lawyer Farid al-Deeb told AFP that his client ought
to go free as he “has already served” three years in prison.
