Jolly Tumuhiirwe,
22 the Ugandan nanny that assaulted an 18 months old baby ahs been sentenced to
four years imprisonment at Buganda Road Court in Kampala, Uganda.
The case
sparked outrage in this East African country after video footage circulated
that appeared to show the nanny beating a child under the age of 2.
The Chief magistrate,
Lillian Buchana read the sentence to her and repeatedly expelled the nanny’s defense
when she said she assaulted the baby because she was also tortured by the baby’s
mother.
During
sentencing, the judge said Tumuhiirwe has committed an “unjustifiable” crime
and the sentence was appropriate for the “ruthlessness” exhibited on an innocent
child.
Ladislaus
Rwakafuuzi, the nanny's lawyer, said Monday the punishment is appropriate and
he does not intend to appeal. He said the court "spoke for many
Ugandans."
