Mandela Remembrance
walk was held today to commemorate the first anniversary of the death of the late
President Nelson Mandela who passed away at his Houghton home in Johannesburg
on the 5th December,2014.
The
remembrance walk, held under the theme "Mandela's Legacy Lives on",
aimed at bringing people together in looking back at the values taught by
Mandela. The 6-kilometer walk started at the Freedom Park
, Pretoria then proceeded through Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Services ,then Madiba
Street right into Nelson Mandela Drive and left into Stanza Bopape Street
ending at the Union Buildings.
The walk
was led by Guateng Premier David Makhura also present were African National
Congress,(ANC) talwrt Andrew Mlangebi, Gauteng Sport, Arts, Culture and
Recreation MEC Molebatsi Bopape, Ahmed Kathrada, Sophie de Bruyn and Andrew
Mlangeni.
After
completing their walk, members of the Nelson Mandela family, together with
struggle stalwarts and government officials laid their wreaths at the Mandela
statute in front of the Union Buildings, the official seat of the South African
government in Pretoria.
Graca
Machel, the wife of the late former President spoke after the walk at the Union
Building.
