Italian President, Giorgio Napolitano, 89, has confirmed his plans to resign at the end of the year well befor the expiry of his term in 2020 in a speech
to the diplomatic corps.
Napolitano
in stepping down will kept to a promise he made last year when he accepted
an unprecedented second term in the spring of 2013 as head of state when
squabbling lawmakers couldn't agree on a successor. Napolitano's
re-election was a way to break a two-month long stalemate among political
parties in parliament, which had been brought about by inconclusive elections.
The
89-year-old Napolitano is expected to announce as soon as New Year's Eve that
he will leave office when Italy's term at the helm of the rotating European
Union presidency ends in mid-January.
