Seven
robbers held Pick and Pay staff hostage at about 9am at Pick n Pay Hyper,
Maponya Mall, Soweto yesterday. They came through the back of Pick n Pay where
workers were about to report for duty.
The
workers notified security and the robbers entered the store. They and security
guards exchanged shots, before the men fled, firing randomly. Luckily, nothing
was stolen and no one was wounded.
Authorities
are now searching for the armed men who were dressed in Pick n Pay uniforms.
South
African Council of Shopping Centre (SACSC) president Marna van der Walt says
security at shopping malls remains a great concern for them. Van der
Walt says they are working very hard to ensure that shopping centres across the
country are safe during this festive season.
The incident happened moments before the store opened. This is the second robbery at the Pick n Pay.
The rate of crimes increase in SA is proportional to the rate of unemployment.
