18 time Olympic medalist Micheal Phelps sentenced

US swimmer and 18 time Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps,29, pleaded guilty to a drunken-driving charge in Baltimore but avoided jail time.

The 29-year-old was pulled over on 30 September for speeding and crossing a double yellow line while driving through a
tunnel in downtown Baltimore after leaving the Horseshoe Casino.
He tested at nearly twice the legal alcohol limit when he was arrested in Baltimore in September.

Police documents show his blood alcohol concentration was registered at 0.14%. The legal limit to drive in the state of Maryland is 0.08%.
He was initially stopped for speeding after being caught going at 84mph (135km/h) in a 45mph zone along Interstate 395 in Baltimore.

He was charged with driving under the influence, crossing double lines and speeding. With his guilty plea to driving under the influence, prosecutors said the other two charges would not be pursued.

Though Baltimore District Court Judge Nathan Braverman sentenced Phelp to the maximum one-year in prison under the law, Braverman suspended that in favour of probation, which will include random alcohol and drug testing. Which implies that during that time Phelps must totally abstain from drinking alcohol.

Phelps retired after winning his 22nd Olympic medal at the London Games in 2012 but came out of retirement earlier this year.
