Following a three-year legal tussle between Shell and 15,600
Nigerians from Ogoniland, mostly fishermen, Royal Dutch Shell Plc has agreed to
pay compensation to residents of the Bodo community in Nigeria’s crude-rich
Niger River delta region for two “highly regrettable” oil spills in 2008.
According to Reuters, Shell will pay out 55 million pounds ($83.4 million) in
compensation after agreeing on a settlement
with the affected community. This is the largest ever out-of-court settlement
relating to oil spills in Nigeria is a step forward for the oil-rich Niger
Delta region that has been hit by regular environmental damage,
